New free drop-off, pick-up zone at Glasgow Airport

A new covered pick-up and drop-off zone opened at Glasgow airport today.

The zone will enable drivers to drop-off and pick-up passengers without the need to use Glasgow airport parking.

The drop-off, pick-up zone is located on the ground floor of the multi-storey car park right opposite the Glasgow’s main terminal building. It’s a no-wait, no-parking zone with stays limited to a maximum of 10 minutes - stays of more than 10 minutes will incur a premium charge.

Motorists needing to stay for more than 10 minutes must use the designated Glasgow airport parking bays located in car parks 1, 2 and 3.

The new zone has been built at a cost of £150,000 and will complement the current St Andrew’s Drive drop-off.

Airport parking options

At most UK airports the options available for airport parking are:

On-site parking
On-site parking offers short-stay and long-stay parking. Short-stay is close to the airport terminal and is ideally suited for passenger drop-off and pick-up. Parking is charged at an hourly rate for the first day of parking and daily rates thereafter. The daily rate is significantly more expensive than onsite, long-stay parking.

On-site long-term parking is for travellers who require parking for an extended period. Car parking fees are cheaper than the short-stay car parks, but generally more expensive than the off-site car parks.

Off-site parking
With off-site airport parking passengers drive to an off-site car park, park their car and catch a shuttle bus to the airport terminal.

Off-site car parks run shuttle buses to and from the airport, so on your return from holiday you’ll need to catch a shuttle bus back to your off-site car park. Parking fees are generally lower for off-site parking spaces.

Meet and greet valet parking
Meet and greet parking, or valet parking, is parking where you don’t have to park your own car. You drive right up to the airport terminal, are met by a meet and greet driver who then parks your car for you leaving you free to walk straight into the airport terminal. It is brought back to you at the airport terminal when you arrive home from your holiday.

How to save money on airport parking

The options for airport parking are huge, and choice often comes down to preference and budget, but if you want to save money when booking your airport parking the number one rule is to book early.

Yes, there are a huge number of parking spaces at every airport, but don’t forget you aren’t the only one flying and as departure day gets closer, particularly during peak holiday periods, you could find your choice of parking options reduced and, as the number of bays decrease, the prices often rise – it’s the old rule of ‘supply and demand’!

So get in to the habit of booking your airport parking when you book your flights and you could find yourself saving loads of money.
