Essex County Council Trading Standards issues meet and greet warning

Essex County Council Trading Standards has issued a warning about meet and greet parking, advising travellers to research their chosen company carefully before booking.

Trading Standards has a Buy with Confidence award which is given to reputable businesses that have been vetted and approved by Trading Standards to ensure that they operate in a legal, honest and fair way.

Gatwick Airport recently introduced an Approved Operator scheme for Gatwick meet and greet parking companies - one of the main criteria is to achieve the Buy with Confidence award.

Meet and greet parking tips from the BBC

Your Money Their Tricks programme covered holiday problems last week and highlighted problems with a few meet and greet parking companies at Gatwick, Heathrow and Luton Airport.

The programme tested two meet and greet parking companies at each of the airports and then offered tips for customers of meet and greet parking.

While the full programme is no longer available on BBC iPlayer, there is a short video giving tips to customers - it can be viewed here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01cwzhj

The short video also makes mention of Gatwick Airport's new Approved Operator Scheme for meet and greet parking companies, which currently has nine members.

A list of Approved Operators can be found here http://www.gatwickairport.com/business/opportunities/approved-operator-scheme/ - scroll to the bottom of the page for names.

The meet and greet parking companies that Your Money Their Tricks had a problem with at Gatwick were NOT members of the Approved Operator Scheme.

World's largest automated car park

I've just come across the world's largest automated parking facility thanks to Parking Network.

This amazing car park - or car storage system, which is probably more appropriate - is in the Emirates Financial Towers in Dubai (of course).

The facility is a fully electro-mechanical system, which can handle up to 6 cars per minute, and store up to 1,191 cars over its nine floors. Take a look at the car park in operation below:

Return of cars is simple too, and shouldn't require any waiting, as the parking system system is “intelligent” in that it will adapt based on a driver’s parking history and automatically shuffle the vehicle towards the exit a few minutes before the driver’s standard departure time.

Now wouldn't it be great if we could introduce these facilities for airport parking?
