Southend Airport's free parking doesn't include Feb half term

At the beginning of January Southend Airport announced it was offering free airport parking during January and February, however, there’s a catch: it’s not available during February’s half term holiday.

The loophole came to light after a holidaymaker found she couldn’t get free parking during half term and informed the Echo. In fact, the lady reported her ‘free’ parking would cost more than £40.

According to the Echo, more than 500 free parking bookings have been taken since the announcement.

Southend Airport’s Managing Director Alastair Welch told the Echo: "Like special deals offered by all types of businesses, certain terms and conditions apply for a number of reasons.

“With our free parking offer we needed to ensure there is always space available for our passengers and we need to make sure we continue to have space available for customers who choose to fly through the airport at half term.”

Southend meet and greet firm in planning battle

A Southend Airport meet and greet parking company, which began operating in April 2012, faces an uncertain future after it failed to gain planning permission, the Echo reports.

The company, Southend Airport Car Park Ltd (SACP), which employs ten people, has been refused planning permission because Southend Council believes Southend airport already offers sufficient airport parking spaces for its passengers.

Speaking to the Echo, financial director of SACP said, “We will appeal this decision and we believe we have a good case.

“To say the airport already has enough spaces is basically saying no one has a right to compete.

“We are creating jobs and surely some jobs are better than none?”

Eco-friendly 'Smart Highway' that glows in the dark

In the past on this blog we have explored ideas for environmentally-friendly technologies that can be employed to make parking more eco-friendly.

We’ve witnessed solar car parking whereby solar panels can generate sufficient electricity to charge electric vehicles, and also solar eco parking, however, in Holland they’re taking these eco ideas to a whole new level with the introduction of a glow-in-the-dark road.

The “Smart Highway" uses hi-tech photoluminescent paint that ‘charges up’ during the day and ‘switches on’ at night, providing up to 10 hours of glow.

The super high-tech road can even warn drivers of icy conditions. The “Smart Highway” is due to open in the middle of 2013 in the Brabant province.

The Telegraph has produced a video demonstrating some of the possible technologies which could be used on the road – see below:
