Pay by phone parking - the future of parking?

Could we see an end to parking tickets caused by motorists simply failing to realise that their parking period has come to an end?

Possibly, if a trial by New York City is successful and parking authorities in the UK adopt the technology.

New York City is planning to run a year-long test on new "pay-by-phone" parking meters in nearly 300 spots.

The “pay-by-phone” parking meters warn motorists that their time on the meter is running low and invites them to top up their time without the inconvenience or returning to their cars.

“After a one-time registration online, drivers will simply use an app or text message to enter the number of the meter they are parking at and the amount of time they wish to purchase, said Bruce Schaller, deputy transportation commissioner.

"More and more is being paid by credit card, but the majority of parking fees is still cash," he said.

"However, the main goal here is convenience for drivers."

The technology is already in use in Atlanta and Washington

Cardiff Airport cuts pre-booked parking fees

Cardiff Airport has reduced the cost of its pre-booked parking, seven months after Walesonline revealed that customers booking pre-paid Cardiff Airport parking were paying 25% more than gate prices.

Traditionally with airport parking, it is recognized that booking airport parking in advance is much cheaper than just turning up on the day and paying the gate prices – typically, customers can save up to 60%. However, in January 2011, Walesonline revealed that customers pre-booking at the on-airport NCP car park were being charged £81.50 a week, compared with £65 charged to customers just turning up on the day.

The difference in fees caused outrage however, Walesonline is now reporting that pre-booked fees have now been slashed to £44.50 per week.
